Helldivers 2 for the PS5 and PC is now out, and we've enlisted three IGN staff members to take on the disgusting bug like Terminids, and the Terminator-esque Automatons, in this explosive, intense and bloody 18 minutes of 4K 60FPS gameplay - all captured with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU.
What’s unique about the story of Helldivers 2 is that it’s driven by the player community. Planning for that is a huge challenge – we have what we think will happen, but we ultimately can’t control what the players do. Which as a player I find cool, but as a writer I find really scary.
As you complete missions, collect loot from points of interest on the galaxy's battlefields, and earn XP, you'll level up and get various currencies that allow you to unlock new weapons and armor pieces.
Plus, some elements of the post-processing, like the screen-space reflections, didn't give very much of an Unreal impression to me. It turns out that the game is using a modified version of the discontinued Autodesk Stingray game engine, which makes more sense. A variant of this engine powered the excellent Warhammer 40K: Darktide, and while Helldivers 2 isn't quite as striking, I think the game looks strong overall. But Environmental critiques are fine but perhaps miss the point: Helldivers 2 is an action-packed title, and much of your time is spent engaging with the game's insect and robotic foes. These firefights can look pretty extraordinary, especially when all four players are tightly clustered, trying to defend an objective. The key here is how enemies react when shot: each bullet strike spawns little bits of blood or smoke, alongside chunks of viscera or mechanical bits. It makes the simple act of firing at enemies satisfying.
Its tight gameplay loop, excellent combat, and clever squad dynamics also make it one of the best and most fun tactical co-op shooters in years. And that’s good news for democracy.
So whether you're jumping into your Hellpod for the first time or you've already taken down an onslaught of Terminids and Automatons, here are our tips and tricks to get you started in Helldivers 2.
Many games that support cross-platform play also allow you to carry your progress over to other versions as long as you link your accounts on different platforms together, but this isn't one of them. Sadly, Helldivers 2 does not support cross-save or cross-progression right now.
“I personally love writing for a game with opportunities for comedy, and that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I hope I can find a game like that soon…”
Even if you’re playing on easy you’ll want to nab all samples and yellow beams you find. Those yellow beams give you credits for better unlocks, including the kind you can pay for in the shop, and don’t worry if your buddy gets to them first. The contents will be distributed to your team.
There are some genuine frame-rate drops in the mix, with the game dropping to the high 20s, although these aren't very common. The PC version has a serviceable options menu with a typical range of selectables, including texture quality, shadow quality, volumetrics quality, and options for screen-space reflections and screen-space global illuminations. Sticking to the standard quality presets, low settings dramatically alters the terrain and decimates shadows and should really be avoided if at all possible. Medium makes the terrain match the collison, greatly improves shadow res, and adds TAA, ambient occlusion, and additional foliage. The high preset adds in more foliage and improves shadows, and the ultra preset looks very similar to high but with extra shadow Helldivers 2 Gameplay detail. Performance-wise, there's a huge FPS boost by sliding down to the low preset, though the other presets are pretty similar in performance based on testing using an RTX 4090.

The gameplay loop is so tight, it would be laughably slim in the wrong hands. You team up, hit the planet, kill things, collect stuff then extract to count your earnings and buy better weapons. Repeat until exhausted. Levelling up unlocks new collections of deadlier hardware, but it’s basically the same thing over and over again until the planet has been “liberated” and you and all the other players in the world move on to another (yes, there’s a global real-time battle map, with every participant contributing to the intergalactic, ahem, peace effort).
